Am I suitable for PRESBYOND® laser eye surgery?

Suitability

Am I suitable for PRESBYOND laser eye surgery?

Not everyone is suitable for PRESBYOND treatment. But it can be life-changing for those who are. Here’s what our ideal PRESBYOND candidate looks like:

  • Age 40+.
  • Good general health.
  • Hyperopia, myopia and astigmatism.
  • Relatively stable vision prescription (we’ll confirm this at your assessment).
  • Healthy eyes (no cataracts, active eye disease, infection or inflammation).
  • Healthy corneas (we’ll know this when we examine your eyes).

    Sounds like me!

What if I’m not suitable for PRESBYOND?

Not a PRESBYOND candidate? Disappointing (we get it) but don’t worry. We have options!
Refractive lens exchange with multifocal and trifocal technology (IOL) could be your path to clearer vision.

Tech talk

Everything you need to know about PRESBYOND laser eye surgery

What is PRESBYOND laser eye surgery?

As our eye’s lens naturally loses its flexibility, it’s less able to zoom from distant to near objects, and reading gets harder and harder. This is called presbyopia.

While other Melbourne ophthalmologists still resort to traditional solutions, like refractive lens exchange and IOL implantation, at ELS, we prefer the safer, less invasive and more accurate procedure PRESBYOND.

PRESBYOND surgery doesn’t require the removal your eye’s natural lens. Instead, it uses an advanced algorithm to harness the safety and track record of LASIK.

How does PRESBYOND® work?

How does PRESBYOND work?

In all laser vision correction treatments, we apply a laser pulse to the cornea to create the precise shape necessary to restore clear, crisp vision.

During a PRESBYOND treatment, one eye is corrected for distance vision, while the other eye is corrected for near vision. Unlike monovision treatments, PRESBYOND also optimises the depth of field for each eye individually. Meaning you retain binocular vision.

Step 1: Preparation

We numb your eyes with anaesthetic eye drops and offer a mild sedative for increased comfort.

Step 2: Flap creation

Using the VisuMax® 800 femtosecond laser, we create a corneal flap and gently fold it back

Step 3: Cornea reshaping

The MEL 90 excimer laser creates the precise corneal shape necessary to correct your vision.

Step 4: Completion

We gently replace the flap which heals naturally without stitches. The entire procedure takes about 20 minutes for both eyes.

What is PRESBYOND recovery like?

Your eyes are likely to be stingy and sore for the first 4 hours after surgery, but visual correction is almost instantaneous. Clear shields should be worn for the first few nights to protect your eyes from bumping or rubbing.

Although your vision improves for distance and reading overnight, it continues to do so over time as neural adaptation kicks in.

Most people go back to work within days and sporting activities after a fortnight.
