LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is a laser eye surgery treatment that can correct short-sightedness (myopia), far-sightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism. It’s been performed on over 70 million eyes since the early 1990’s and is the most well-established vision correction surgery in the world.

Disclaimer: It’s important to note that not everyone is suitable for vision correction treatment, and every patient’s journey is a little bit different.Healing responses are unique, and results and benefits may vary. In some laser eye surgery cases, over- and under-correction may occur, and a top-up laser procedure called an ‘enhancement’ may be required.

As with any surgery, there are risks of which you’ll be fully informed before any decisions are made. Every claim about safety, effectiveness or precision is backed by published peer-reviewed research. See full study references on our Clinical Evidence page.

Eternally grateful for this 5* experience

After carefully researching I chose Eye Laser Specialists and was impressed immediately with the staff, cleanliness and overall first impression of my free consultation. I was extremely nervous on the surgery day and the staff were great to deal with and extremely accommodating. The surgeon was so relaxed and calm and was honestly having banter with me throughout the whole experience. Dr Anton has genuinely changed my life and I am eternally grateful. 5* experience.

Tech talk

Everything you need to know about LASIK laser vision correction

What is LASIK?

LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is a laser vision correction treatment suitable for most patients with short sightedness, long sightedness and astigmatism.

This refractive surgery is a computer-guided two-step procedure. Your eye surgeon uses a femtosecond laser and then an excimer laser to achieve the exact corneal curvature required for clearer vision.

Your vision correction procedure is complete in just 15 minutes.

How does LASIK eye surgery work

First, we numb your eyes with anaesthetic eye drops and offer a mild sedative for increased comfort.

Then, using the VisuMax® 800 femtosecond laser, we create a thin corneal flap and gently fold it back.

Using the MEL 90 excimer laser, we sculpt the corneal tissue to correct your refractive error.

Finally, we gently replace the thin flap, which heals quickly and naturally by itself.

LASIK laser eye surgery recovery

What is LASIK recovery like, and what results can I expect?

Visual recovery after LASIK treatment is typically rapid, though your eyes may sting and feel sensitive for the first 4 hours after surgery.

Most people enjoy clear vision the next day, return to work within a few days and sporting activities after a fortnight.

Numerous studies and our own experiences show that 99% of LASIK patients achieve 20/40 (driving level) or better vision correction after surgery. More than 90% of LASIK patients enjoy 20/20 vision without visual aids.

What are the potential risks and side effects of LASIK?

Just like any laser eye procedure, LASIK carries some risks. We provide a dry eye kit in preparation for your LASIK surgery, since the most common side effect from any eye surgery is dry eyes.

You may experience blurry vision temporarily and halos around lights, particularly at night. These typically improve within 24 hours, although haloes may persist for about a month.

Rest assured, we’ll explain all risks at your initial consultation and provide clear guidance at every step.
