IPL treatment for dry eye: What happens at an IPL appointment?

IPL stands for intense pulse light. When we apply this light to the skin around the glands of the eye, it helps to improve your tear film surface, and it relieves the symptoms of dry eye.

How long does IPL treatment take?

IPL is usually very quick. We either treat just the lower section of the face or you may have a mask that applies the light to your full face. If you’re having the mask treatment, it usually takes 15 minutes. If we’re treating just the lower section, that may only take five minutes.

Does IPL treatment hurt?

There is no pain with IPL treatment. You may just feel a little bit of warmth. Russ (n.d.). Dry Eyes: What Is Intense Pulsed Light Therapy? Optometrists.org. Available here [Accessed 1 Sep. 2021].

After IPL treatment, you should feel quite comfortable. Most patients say that they feel completely fine. You may feel a little bit of warmth in the skin, but on the whole, everyone is quite comfortable.
