What are the LASIK risks?

LASIK surgery is a highly successful procedure. It’s been done millions of times around the globe, and it’s really very successful.
Like any operation, there are going to be some side effects and some risks of the surgery. The most common side effect a patient will get is dry eye, and that usually lasts anywhere between one week to three months after the surgery and is mostly resolved just with eyedrops.

With some people, there’s a small risk of needing repeat treatment, and that all depends on how bad your eyes are at the start. So the worse your eyes, or the bigger the correction that we need to correct at the time of the laser, the higher the need for a re-treatment or enhancement surgery.

Out of all the LASIK surgeries I do, I’ve probably done enhancements on about 2% to 3% of the LASIK patients that I’ve ever done.

When you come in for your assessment, we’ll go through a full raft of risks and benefits of the surgery. But for most of the time, it’s a seamless procedure, the most common thing being dry eye.
