A lens-based alternative to laser vision correction

Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) surgery Melbourne

Not suitable for laser vision correction? You’ve still got options. With implantable collamer lenses that work in harmony with your natural eye, you could enjoy the best vision you’ve had in years.

Are you a candidate? Let’s find out.

Want all the insights on implantable collamer lens surgery?

We’re talking what they are, how they work, and if an ICL procedure could be right for you.

If you want improved vision but you’re not suitable for laser eye surgery, implantable collamer lenses (ICLs) could be your solution. Unlike laser eye surgery which reshapes your cornea, ICL surgery is a lens-based solution in which a biocompatible lens is placed behind your iris and in front of your natural lens.

Implantable collamer lenses work a bit like a contact lens, but you can’t feel them and they remain in your eye with no need for maintenance. For suitable patients, they deliver clearer vision without glasses or contact lenses, even if your short-sightedness, long-sightedness or astigmatism is severe.

Am I suitable for an ICL procedure

Suitability

Am I suitable for an ICL procedure?

ICLs are an ideal solution if you’d love to wake up with clearer vision but you’re not suitable for laser eye surgery. You may be suitable if you:

  • Are over 21 years old and in good overall health.
  • Have a stable prescription and suitable levels of myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism.
  • Have healthy eyes with no active eye disease, infection or inflammation.
  • Have healthy but thin or irregular corneas that make laser surgery unsuitable.
  • Are looking for a permanent but reversible vision correction solution.

Sounds like me!

Tech talk

Everything you need to know about ICL eye surgery

What is an ICL?

An implantable collamer lens (ICL) is an ultra-thin, flexible lens that works a bit like a contact lens by focusing light onto the retina to provide instant vision correction.

Unlike a contact lens, you can’t feel an ICL implant, and it requires no maintenance. It can remain permanently in your eye or be removed if required.

How do you ensure my ICLS are the perfect fit?

Achieving the best visual outcome starts with precision planning and ensuring your ICLs are the perfect fit.

We use advanced diagnostic and imaging tools to measure every detail of your eye’s internal structure. The MS39 scanner maps the front of your eye with remarkable clarity, while the Sonomed Escalon VuPAD captures high-resolution ultrasound images for added accuracy.

These detailed measurements are then analysed with ICL Guru – an AI-powered tool that helps us select the ideal lens size. By combining expert planning with next-generation technology, we ensure your ICLs deliver clear, comfortable vision and lasting eye health.

How does ICL surgery work?

The ICL procedure is a day surgery performed in-hospital. Treatment for both eyes takes around 30 minutes with a total stay of less than 2 hours.

1: Preparation

We administer anaesthetic eye drops and a light sedative to help you feel at ease.

2: ICL insertion

We create a very small opening in your cornea, then gently insert and position your ICL.

3: Completion

The incision heals naturally, typically within a week.

What results can I expect from PRK laser eye surgery

What can I expect after surgery?

You’ll be prescribed mediated eye drops to prevent infection and given clear post-op care instructions. No rubbing, heavy lifting or vigorous exercise for the first week. We’ll check your eyes are healed before giving you the all-clear.

Rapid results

Most patients notice improved vision almost immediately.

Light sensitivity and reduced near vision

Your pupils will remain dilated for several hours post-surgery. This generally settles within 24 hours.

Short recovery time

Most patients are back in action (without the need for glasses or contacts) within a few days.

ICLs follow ups

Do ICLs require follow-ups?

Yes – and we’re thorough about it. After surgery, multiple follow-ups help us confirm your ICLs are well-positioned and functioning as intended, that your eyes are healthy, and that you can see as clearly as you hoped.

Refractive surgery risks

What are the potential risks and side effects?

ICL surgery is safe and predictable in the right hands and a great alternative for those unsuitable for laser surgery. But as with any surgical procedure, it carries some risks, especially if not fitted correctly. Rest assured, we’ll walk you through all the details and explain how we minimise every risk.

Pricing

How much does ICL refractive surgery cost?

Investment in ICL surgery is $5500 per eye, which includes:

All diagnostic scans and measurements
Your hospital fee and anaesthetist fee
Your custom-made implantable collamer lenses
Your surgery at The Avenue Hospital, Windsor, Melbourne
Pre- and post-op medication
All follow up visits at 1 day, 1 week and 1 month.

Understanding Medicare and Private Health Insurance cover

Sadly, Medicare doesn’t typically cover ICL surgery because it’s considered an elective procedure rather than a medical necessity. The same goes for private health insurance, although some policies may offer limited coverage or rebates. Check your policy details, and let us know if you’d like help asking the right questions.
