Laser blended vision explained
Everything you need to know about laser blended vision eye surgery
Laser blended vision is especially well suited for people with very busy and active lifestyles who often find having to use reading glasses inconvenient.
Laser blended vision is effective for treating patients with presbyopia and other refractive errors like myopia, hyperopia or/and astigmatism.
To find out if laser vision correction is right for you, we must take your vision requirements and expectations into consideration. That is why you will have to answer questions about your hobbies, your daily activities and other aspects that might affect the decision.
Because we customise the laser blended vision treatment to each patient, you will also have to undergo a detailed eye examination. The nature and degree of your refractive error(s), curvature and thickness of the cornea, as well as many other factors, play a role.
We will also test your tolerance level for monovision and ocular dominance using contact lenses. This way, we can simulate the vision we are hoping to achieve with laser vision correction to allow you to see if this treatment is right for you.
Most conventional treatment methods – surgical treatments as well as contact lenses – use the principle of monovision. This is where we correct one eye for distance and the other eye for near vision. The brain must then adjust to seeing two images corrected for different distances. Unfortunately, some patients are unable to get used to the procedure. Patients frequently experience an area of compromised vision in the intermediate range – the blur zone. Those patients that can tolerate the procedure often require some time to adjust to their new eyesight.
Laser blended vision
By comparison, laser blended vision offers a variety of extra advantages – specifically, customised treatments that result in sharply focused vision at all distances. With this technique, we treat one eye to view objects mainly at a distance, but a little up close, and we treat the other to view objects mainly up close, but a little at a distance. The brain puts the two images together and enables the individual to see distance and near without effort. In most cases, the brain can compensate, and you will experience an excellent depth of focus and overall visual acuity, without the need to wear glasses or contact lenses.
The unique blend zone makes it easier for the brain to maintain its binocular vision by merging the images of both eyes for your normal 3D vision. Most patients experience immediate improvement.
Advantages
Laser blended vision offers several advantages over conventional methods. It is:
- Non-invasive surgery
- Quick recovery
- Blended vision gives excellent binocular vision over all distances1
- Instantly reversible with glasses
Disadvantages
- Better distance vision in the dominant eye
- Better near vision in the near eye
- Difficulty adapting to new vision (it can take up to 3 months)
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
Laser blended vision surgery risks include:
- Dry eye
- Flap complications
- Sometimes the brain is unable to adapt to the new vision
- There is a high re-treatment rate
The alternatives to laser blended vision are lens replacement and lens exchange.
Lens replacement is where we place a lens implant inside the eye which corrects the glasses prescription. It is like wearing a contact lens permanently except the contact lens is in the eye rather than on the surface of the eye.
Lens exchange is where we remove the natural lens and replace it with a multifocal lens implant to give good distance, intermediate and close-up vision.
Step 1: Creating the flap
We create a flap with a highly precise femtosecond laser.
Step 2: Changing the laser
We reposition you to the MEL90 excimer laser.
Step 3: Folding back the flap
We gently fold back the flap, exposing the inner corneal tissue that we need to treat.
Step 4: Correcting the error
The MEL90 Excimer laser reshapes the corneal tissue correcting the refractive error.
Step 5: Repositioning the flap
The flap is returned to its original position, protecting the eye like a natural bandage.
