Doctor Anton is a superstar!

Doctor Anton is a superstar surgeon! His admin team and clinical staff were absolute sweethearts. I dare say, I don’t think there are any (or many) other clinics like them in Melbourne.

Background and qualifications

Dr Anton Van Heerden (MBCHB; FRANZCO) is an expert cataract and vision correction (refractive) surgeon. Formerly Head of Department, Surgical Ophthalmology Services at The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Dr Anton is now a Director of Eye Laser Specialists, Armadale Eye Clinic and Mornington Peninsula Clinic.

Dr Anton completed his medical degree at Stellenbosch University, South Africa and began his junior medical career in rural KwaZulu-Natal. The ophthalmology department was a ‘beacon of light’ in a chaotic medical system and Dr Anton’s experiences helping patients arriving blind from cataracts only to leave the next day with restored vision were profound. In a continent where blindness can equate to a death sentence, the ability to not just restore sight but also to offer patients a renewed chance at a long and healthy life was nothing short of a calling.

It was this impactful work and the tangible difference it made in people’s lives that ignited Dr Anton’s passion for ophthalmology. Since then, he has dedicated himself to the field, driven by the life-changing impact he can make on the lives of others.

Dr Anton went on to become a member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in London, UK where he furthered his surgical skills. He completed his post-graduate training at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa before moving to Melbourne, where he completed his fellowship training in medical retina and inflammatory eye disease at The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital.

Outside of work…

Between surgery lists, Dr Anton likes to spend time outdoors keeping fit by cycling, kitesurfing and wing foiling. He completed the Melbourne Iron Man in 2013 and has run several marathons and ultra-marathons.

Dr Anton’s personal mantra is ‘Live every day as if it’s your last’ and he gets his kicks from the British comedy troupe Monty Python. Together with his paediatrician wife Carolyn, he has teenage twins, and a crazy Kelpie called Congo.
