SMILE Pro is a next-generation laser eye surgery procedure designed to gently correct vision with minimal disruption to the eye.
It uses computer-assisted technology and a single, ultra-fast femtosecond laser to reshape the cornea, without the need for a flap as in LASIK surgery. The procedure takes less than 10 minutes from start to finish. And yes, that’s for both eyes.
During SMILE Pro surgery, a high-speed, high-precision laser carves out a carefully calculated lens-shaped disc (‘lenticule’) of corneal tissue.
Next, it makes a tiny keyhole incision through which our experienced surgeons can gently extract the disc. This changes the shape of the cornea so that light can focus where it should – directly on the retina – to give you clearer, sharper vision.
First, we get you comfy in our laser suite, and then we numb your eyes with topical eye drops. In just 10 seconds, we create the lenticule and a 2-4mm incision using the VisuMax® 800 laser.
We gently extract the lenticule through the incision, correcting the shape of the cornea to focus your vision.
The incision heals quickly and naturally, with most patients able to see well the next day.
Immediately after treatment, vision is foggy, and there’s some mild discomfort. But after 4 hours, you’re likely to be pain-free with functional vision. You’ll only need a day or two off work. And since SMILE® Pro is a flapless, keyhole surgery, you can safely return to exercise 3 days later.
Extensive clinical studies and our own experiences show that 90% of SMILE Pro eye surgery patients can see well enough to drive the day after surgery. 99.9% can see well enough to drive 3 days later.
